The Right Mental Approach to the Game of Baseball
www.BatAction.com
By Bill Bathe
What is a mental approach and what is the right frame of mind? You often hear about the mental approach to the game. But some people don't understand what this means. It simply means how you think about the game before actually playing the game. Let's explore it.
Before you even reach the field there is a preparation that takes place. It all starts in practice and even on the drills you are doing before the game. You often hear 'the right frame of mind'. Well, it applies to all aspects of baseball.
As far as practice, it simply means that you are going about your business with a purpose in mind and doing it efficiently. Let's take an example. You are about to do tee work to help your swing. Do you just put the tee up and start hacking? Or do you work on the areas that you need to, like hitting the ball the other way off the tee with you visualizing the outside pitch? You need to have a purpose to what you are doing.
And when you practice, utilize the time to practice the right way. I would rather have 10 minutes of quality, purposeful practice than 20 minutes of practice with no idea of what you are trying to work on.
Same thing goes for batting practice. Are you in the right frame of mind? Are you just wailing away at the pitches. Or are you hitting with purpose and trying to accomplish things? Once again, give me 10 minutes of quality hitting with purpose and not 20 minutes of hooking the ball foul with no idea of what you are trying to do.
These are all small things that carry over into a game. It all begins at this stage of the game. Practice the right way with purpose and you will go into the game with the right frame of mind.
What about the right approach to the game? The mental approach to the game starts with preparation. This means doing your homework and knowing the opposition. What kind of pitcher is throwing today? Is it a sidearm lefthander or an over the top righthander that throws 95 mph? If it's a sidearming lefthander, than maybe in batting practice I will visualize the sinking fastball on the outside corner and really work hard on shortening up and just trying to stroke the ball the other way. If it's a hard throwing flame thrower than maybe my batting practice today will be on being short to the ball and trying to be a little quicker.Do you see what I mean?
Now you are having purpose the right frame of mind, or simply, the right mental approach to the game. By combining the right mental approach with the right drills and practice, you will be well on your way to vastly improving your game.

Coaching Baseball Batters - 3 Common Baseball Swing Mistakes and Corrections
By Nick Dixon
Coaching youth and high school baseball batters requires a watchful eye and close attention to detail. Baseball coaches must identify and correct any flaw in batting hitting mechanics. Players should not be allowed to practice their swing over and over without correcting their mistakes. Good baseball coaches are always on the constant lookout for any bad habits that a young player may develop. Here I discuss three of the most common hitting mechanical flaws and my approach to correcting each. Here are three common mistakes I often see at my baseball camps and when I observe youth games and youth practices.
1) BARRING THE FRONT ARM - The batter locks or stiffens the front arm as the swing begins. Many young batters will have assumed the correct stance and launch positions but have a tendency to tighten up as the swing begins. The barring of the front arm causes the swing to loop and to be too long. The batter has great difficulty taking the bat to the ball and making contact unless the ball is thrown exactly on the swing plane. The proper swing has a "short stroke" or path to the ball. The best way to correct barring of the front arm is to make sure that the batter keeps the front arm elbow bent or at an "L" position prior and during the swing.
2) STEPPING OUT OR PULLING OFF PITCHES - I often see this with young kids in our summer camp program. They always step out or their front side often flies open before the ball arrives. This batter has great difficulty making contact. Until this flaw is corrected, the batter will only become frustrated and embarrassed. To keep the front shoulder in the proper "closed" position, teach the batter to keep the front shoulder closed and directed at the second baseman for right-handed batters and toward the shortstop for left-handed batters. The stepping out is a more difficult flaw to fix. Having the batter pick the front heel off the ground and stepping just slightly toward the plate may help. I frown on putting obstructions behind the front foot to keep it from moving backward, although many coaches do this to stop this bad habit. I often use the "step in and hit: drill with a hit trainer, Bat Action Machine or batting tee. The batter assumes a position back away from the ball target that requires the batter to step toward the ball in order to make contact. If the batter does not step toward or into the ball, the batter will not be able to hit the ball.
3) UPPER CUT SWING - The upper cut swing may be caused by two things that are quickly identified Dropping the hands and back leg collapse can both cause the batter to swing upward. Make sure that the batter keeps the hands at the top of the strike zone and does not drop the hands or dip the back side shoulder during the swing. The back leg should be keep "tall or straight" to prevent back side dipping which can also cause an upper-cut swing. Two great drills that we use to stop this is the "Zone Circle" tee or soft-toss drill. We make a circle the side of our batting cage by inter-weaving a white or yellow rope in the net. The batter must hit or drive the ball off the tee or from a soft-toss into the circle. The batter must have a level swing and keep the front side in to be able to hit the zone.
COACHING POINT: Make sure that the batter is not over striding. This too can cause a batter to pop up. The batter must concentrate visually on the top half or middle of the ball to make good contact.

How to Improve Arm Strength For Baseball
By Jack Perconte
When people speak of improving arm strength they are basically asking "How can a ballplayer throw a ball faster?" This is one of the most asked questions I received from parents in my twenty one years of teaching baseball and softball. Throwing the ball faster and building arm strength for baseball and softball is basically the same thing. The answer to the question is very simple, "Throw correctly and throw often." There is no magic formula. The secret is all about good, solid throwing mechanics and throwing at least six to nine months out of the year. Of course, many experts will tell you that arm speed is based on genetics; that players are predisposed to being able to throw top speed based on their genetic make-up. I am sure they are correct, however until a player gives it everything they have, meaning the mentioned blend of good mechanics and continual throwing, players do not know what speed they are genetically capable of throwing. Every player is capable of greater arm strength if they put in the practice time. Of course, weaker armed players need to practice more than strong armed players, but weaker armed players have the most to gain, also.
With this in mind, following are tips for helping players improve arm strength:
1. At a young age, parents should have players' throwing mechanics analyzed by a professional throwing coach. Any suggested deficiencies should be addressed until correct throwing fundamentals are attained. Without the correct fundamentals, a player will not reach their potential and probably will be unable to avoid arm (shoulder or elbow) injury at some point.
2. About a month before their team practice begins, players should begin throwing two times a week, followed by three and four times a week.
3. Players should gradually increase speed and distance of throws until they are at maximum line drive distance. Players should throw at least 10 throws from this "long toss" distance and stop when their arm begins to tire or their throws begin to lose distance. Long toss is when players throw at maximum "in the air" distance without putting a big arc in the throw.
4. Once the season begins, position players should throw up to 5 days a week. No extra throwing than normal game day throwing is required. Of course, pitchers must take rest days after pitching.
5. Players should continue throwing a few days a week after their season concludes, up to nine months of the year, with two days a week performing long toss.
Players may not notice immediate improvement in arm strength, but over time they will see much stronger arms. As a coach, I have seen all players improve greatly when they stuck with a long term throwing program. Although strength training exercises do not lead directly to increased arm speed and throwing strength, it can lead to over all strength and quicker arm recovery time. Therefore, a controlled, age oriented strength training program is advised.
A few extra points worth knowing:
* The number of maximum effort throwing days (pitching or long toss) should eliminate one day of throwing during the week. For example, players who normally throw four or five days a week should cut off one day for an extra days rest after pitching or long toss.
*Players who complain of tired or sore arms should not throw through it. Rest days are important to improving arm strength, too.
* Pitchers, who are on travel teams or in leagues without set inning guidelines, are in the most danger of developing sore and tired arms. Adults associated with these teams and leagues should pay special attention to "overuse" throwing. With this in mind, coaches are responsible for making sure their teams carry enough pitchers to handle the pitching load.
*Players should have a three consecutive month break without any throwing at some time of the year.
* There is no harm and maybe some benefits of using a lighter weight ball for some of this throwing.

Yankees to Win 2009 World Series?
By Brett Kingston
Through their first two games of the 2009 ALCS, the Yankees have looked rock solid. It took 13 innings to beat the Los Angeles Angels in game 2, but they played their hearts out and they were there to produce when it mattered most.
The NY Yankees now have a 2 games to none lead on the Los Angeles Angels. While both of these games have been won at home, the Yankees have yet to slip up in these 2009 MLB playoffs. They're now 5-0 in overall playoff play, and you have to wonder when the team will lose its first game already.
The pitching has been phenomenal in New York, and the hitting has just been clutch, to put it simply. Alex Rodriguez already has three post season home runs, and they've been big ones at that. His game tying home run against the Angels in extra innings during game 2 literally saved the game for the Yankees. This is a stark contrast to the Rodriguez who's been so well known for blowing big opportunities at the plate for his team.
Maybe things are different in New York this year. This seems like a Yankees team with a tremendous amount of confidence, and their talent is unrivaled by any other team in baseball.
Might it be enough to surpass the Angels in the ALCS and then the winner of the Dodgers vs. Phillies NLCS series should they make it to the World Series? It seems like 2009 could be the year that brings the Yanks their first World Series in 9 seasons.

Improve Bat Speed Using the Secrets of the Pros
By Alan Bryan
Finding ways to improve bat speed will lead many people to some very strange methods. While there really is no secret that will magically improve bat speed, there are some unique and little known training tools that the pros have used for years to help them increase bat speed as much as ten miles per hour.
Likely, you have seen the basic wrist training techniques and other methods to help you bring the bat through the zone with more efficiency and more power. However, what you may not know is that too much muscle build up can actually slow down your swing. Some of the best techniques that professional players have used do not involve fancy training tools or heavier bats. In fact, ask most professional players and they will tell you using a donut or weighted bat will actually result in a slower swing.
One of the most effective ways to improve bat speed is to understand the proper way to grip the bat. The traditional fist on top of fist grip, as well as chocking up on a bat will result in slower bat speed. Grip the bat with your bottom hand below the knob of the bat, and allow that wrist to flick the bat through the swing zone. This action will improve your bat speed quickly. However, be sure to practice this swing, as learning how to do this and control that bat take some repetition.
There are many other simple technical changes you can make to your swing and your stance that will improve bat speed. Start thinking about feet placement, and how that relates to your hips opening up in your swing. The proper foot placement can allow your hips to open up quicker, which leads to a quicker bat.
There are some excellent ways to improve bat speed and increase your power. See the latest techniques and drills recommended by several professional scouts at http://www.batspeedtraining.info.

10 Ways to Increase Your Baseball Batting Average - Besides Getting a Better Swing
By Jack Perconte
There are many things players can do to raise or maintain a high batting average. Obviously, developing improved baseball swing fundamentals and working on timing the ball are the most beneficial things to do. Beyond that, there are other not so obvious ways to keep a high batting average. This can be the difference between continuing to play and getting a seat on the bench. Dedicated players will look for all means to improve. Improving in the following areas can make at least a hundred point difference in a baseball player's batting average.
1. Improve running speed - the ability to beat out a few extra ground balls a season for a few extra hits will help maintain a good average.
2. Develop good bunting technique - as the previous point, being able to put down a few base hits via the bunt can make a big difference, especially when players are struggling with their swing or timing.
3. Have eyes checked before season - nothing is more important to hitters than their vision. Playing even a few games without great eyesight can be detrimental to a good average.
4. Learn and adhere to the strike zone - chasing bad pitches and not being willing to take a walk will hurt the player's average.
5. Know strengths and weaknesses - hitters who know what pitches they hit best and which they don't will have better success early in the count. (Players should consult coaches for this information if unsure).
6. Study the opposing pitcher - even young players should watch the opposing pitcher during warm-ups and in games to get an idea of their speed, control, etc.
7. Use the whole field - during batting practice players should work on hitting balls where they are pitched. It's a big advantage to be able to hit balls to all fields as opposed to only using half the field.
8. Cut down on swing with two strikes - players who just try to make contact and hit the ball back through the middle with two strikes have a great chance to maintain a high average.
9. Keep a good attitude - hitters that realize their next at bat can be different than their previous failed attempts will succeed. Forgetting bad at-bats is crucial to maintain confidence and belief in oneself.
10. Remember the directions to Carnegie Hall - practice, perfect practice, practice when others aren't.
Finally, good coaches will stress the above suggestions and help players develop these parts of their game. Over time, players will begin to do these on their own and notice how their batting average soars.

Who Makes the Best Youth Baseball Bat? Find Out Here
www.BatAction.com
By Brandon Bland
Many parents want to know what the best youth baseball bat is for their child. Although there are many different brands of bats I would recommend, there is one that has particularly stood out to me consistently as I hear parents talk. There was a kid in our local Little League that hit over 20 home runs with this bat this summer. The company is fairly new, and but they are starting to really make a name for themselves, especially in the youth bat market. You don't see or hear as many adult or college ballplayers using these bats, but they are the talk of the town in the youth leagues.
The company's name is called Combat. That's right, Combat. If you've been around the game of baseball for any length of time, you still may not have heard of this brand of bat. I remember back in my Little League days, it seemed that everyone had either had an Easton or a Louisville Slugger TPX bat. Occasionally you might see an old, rusty Worth. But there are so many new bats coming out on the market today, and I have to admit, some of them are giving Easton and Louisville a run for their money. Not that they don't continue to make quality bats today, because they certainly do. But many companies are producing bats that compete with the two legacy bat companies, and Combat is one of them.
Combat uses composite material technology. In fact they are known for being somewhat of the pioneers of the composite bat industry. Composite material consists of a fiberglass material mixed with a resin to bind it together. Composite bats are rivaling the standard aluminum alloy bats that you may have known up to this point in time. Most companies are offering a mixture of aluminum, composite, and some are even making hybrid models consisting of composite handles, and aluminum barrels. Combat is strictly 100% composite material.
I keep hearing stories of kids popping balls up and still hitting them off the outfield walls with these bats. I do get concerned that the performance of modern day's bats are getting a little bit too ridiculous. I'm a firm believer that the game should be decided between the pitcher and hitter, not a piece of equipment. But I cannot deny what I hear about the Combat bats. Kids that use them are getting results. So there you have it. If you want to know what seems to be a consensus about what the best youth baseball bat is, I would have to say it's Combat. Read more about Combat bats here.

Is Albert Pujols the Best Baseball Hitter of the Last 30 Years?
AlbertPujolsTrainers.com
By Erik Armstrong
This is a debate that people could go on about for a very long time, but many are starting to make the claim that Albert Pujols may in fact be the best hitter of our lifetimes. For the sake of keeping things in check with "modern day" baseball, I'm just going to limit this discussion to players from the last 30 years.
It's really hard to compare players from vastly different eras, so comparing Pujols to someone like Ted Williams or Willie Mays just wouldn't be fair. The game has changed too much, so there's no telling how either player would have played in the other's era.
Still, there are many reasons to argue the merits of Albert Pujols as the best hitter of our generation. First of all, he's only 29 years old so he's likely to continue to improve, or at least maintain his level of play. Most importantly though, he's been extremely consistent through the course of his entire career. Let's look at a few of his.
Pujols has a career average of .334. That's usually good enough to win a league. The lowest he's ever hit in a year was .312, which says enough in and of itself. That was in his second year, and he's never done worse than .327 ever since.
Pujols has also never hit less than 32 home runs in a season, and has broken 40 home runs in 5 of his 9 MLB seasons. These are some of the many amazing stats he's already accumulated. By the end of his career, we may very well be calling him the best hitter of our lives.

Three Effective Baseball Hitting Tips
By Jason M Paul
Tip #1: Pick Your Swings
Nothing causes batters to strike out more often than their swinging at poorly-placed pitches. Memorize your strike zone. Hold out for strong pitches and make the pitcher throw you strikes. If you make a serious effort to only swing at the pitches that are obvious strikes, especially for strike 1 then you will find yourself swinging at better pitches, making better contact and giving yourself more chances to get a hit.
Tip #2: Fix Your Posture
The way you stand while you're at the plate will have an impact on your swing. Tuck your chin in and turn your head so you can easily see the pitcher with both eyes. A lot of players position their heads so they're looking across the bridge of their noses at the pitcher. Don't do this. It can obscure your depth perception of the ball. Buy some MLB tickets on the first base line, or watch the best hitters closely on TV and focus on their eyes. In the best MLB baseball players you will almost certainly see both eyes with a clear line of sight to the pitcher.
Tip #3: Plan To Get On Base
Far too many players try to hit the ball into the stands. If it works, you'll feel like a hero. But, it's safer to plan on hitting the ball up the middle. You're more likely to be in play and get on base. The home runs will come if you swing with a line drive swing instead of a home run swing.
Go watch some MLB baseball tickets and watch the best hitters, more often than not they will hit more line drives and singles and doubles.
There's a science and an art to becoming an effective hitter at the plate. Learn to conserve your swings, fix your posture and get on base. Your team and your manager will be happier with your performance.
Cheap Baseball Tickets is a low cost way to watch the best baseball players in the world hit. For any avid baseball fans there is nothing like visiting your favorite baseball team at the home stadium and historic stadiums like Fenway Park are ones for every baseball fan to visit once in their life. Find some cheap red sox tickets and mark a trip to Fenway off of your list.

Baseball Players - Peak Your Performance!
www.BatAction.com
By Brandon Richey
If you baseball and you are serious about doing something to improve your athleticism then you have got to train your body like there is no tomorrow! In order to work on developing necessary athletic traits such as speed and power 2 great tools for you to use are kettlebells and plyometrics. Read on to learn how this combo can take your game to the next level.
First of all, a baseball player's performance is something that should be constantly worked on from the standpoint of strength and conditioning. Kettlebell and plyometric training are a tremendous way for you to forge a body of power and speed. Implementing both styles of training allow you to conditioning your body for powerfully explosive movements such as the overhead snatch with the kettlebell and hurdle bounds which is a type of plyometric.
Both of these types of exercises help your baseball game by giving you that forceful core power you need for bat speed along with the leg power for outrunning the field! The cool thing is that both kettlebell training and plyometric training can be done effectively and with very little equipment. Remember, I don't care if you are in the Major Leagues the training doesn't have to be a fancy gym to be effective! You must train like an animal for real results.
Take the time to invest in both kettlebells and some general performance equipment. At least go with the kettlebell because of it's versatility. Take your training to a new level. With these 2 principles I promise that your athleticism will drastically improve!

How Do You Treat Umpires?
By Chip Lemin
Hello Coaches,
You probably know by now that I like to promote good sportsmanship, and player, fan in the game of youth baseball. There has never been more demand for proper conduct in youth baseball than today.Youth baseball coaches should consider themselves as statesman of the game.Youth baseball gets a black eye by the poor choices of a small majority. Please, as a youth baseball coach, please up hold the honor and integrity of our great game by setting strong examples for players, spectators, and umpires by.....
Don't be a bench jockey. This includes constant riding of the umpires, along with any personal comments about them or other players, coaches, or fans.Sounds like common sense.Well, some coaches need a refresher course.
Make sure you know the rules of youth baseball before you run your mouth. I will have further articles on some common rule disagreements coming up in later articles, along with a site to access for rule information.
Please limit discussions with umpires to the rules, not challenging the judgment of the umpire.
Coaches shall actively use their influence to enhance sportsmanship by their athletes and spectators.
Before and after contests, rival coaches should meet and exchange friendly greetings in order to set the correct tone for the game.
Contest umpires will be treated with respect and supported by the coach.
The coach shall not indulge in conduct which will incite players or spectators against the umpires.
Public criticism of umpires or players is unethical.
Coaches should develop and promote a spirit of cooperation among the baseball family, including sponsors and any person connected with the program. Baseball is a game of fun, designed for enjoyment of youngsters, not to be a hobby for adults coaching them.
Youth baseball needs every coach, player, fan, etc.. to conduct themselves in a civil friendly fashion. Even if opposing side is not. Do not allow your team or fans to be drawn into any type of interaction that is not in the best interest of youth baseball. I know I am giving a lecture here, but it is vital to the continued growth of this great game. Think before you act. I'll do my best this year also.
Thanks Coach Chip

Baseball Drills - Offensive Pressure Creates Opportunities
By Nate Barnett
One of the best ways to force long innings (when you are on offense of course) and to win more games is to put added pressure on the defense. There are multiple ways of doing this, a couple of which are outlined here. Understanding the concerns of a defense and exploiting those concerns are valuable techniques any good coach will insert into his baseball drills.
Pressure Cooker #1 - Run Like the Wind:
Don't skip this part because you, your son, or the team you coach has little speed. You don't need any to understand this concept. The more offensive movement is created on the base paths, the more potential there is for defensive mistakes. Create movement the following ways:
A. Bigger lead offs. Most youth baseball players don't get a proper lead off at any base. Because of this, the defense doesn't feel the perceived threat of the runner. How long is a good lead? A runner should be able to rotate and dive (body fully extended) back to the bag in time if he is watching the right movements from the pitcher. Getting aggressive leads will do two things. First, it will force the pitcher to split concentration between the runner and the hitter. This will help out the hitter as pitch location may improve with the lack of focus from the pitcher. Secondly, the more throws drawn by the runner at first base (primarily) can results in potential overthrows as well as an increased opportunity to utilize a stolen base or a hit and run play.
B. Take aggressive turns on the bases. I frequently see many younger players after hitting a baseball, jog down to first base and take a small turn around first. This puts zero pressure on the defense. The first goal on any hit to the outfield is to reach second base. The mentality that every hit is a double will help runners become more aggressive. Obviously I'm not advocating running bases wildly, I'm simply promoting adding some extra heat on the defense to provoke some mistakes.
Pressure Cooker #2 - Have a Pitch Plan
It's quite common to watch hitters all the way through high school swing at pitches quite out of the zone. Most of the time this is caused from a lack of a game plan, or improper teaching during baseball drills. Each hitter should have a specific pitch plan based upon his hitting strengths. Every hitter has a special pitch, or one that is more favorable to hit than others. This needs to be the focus early in the count. No other pitches should be offered at early in the count other than the favorite pitch. The only thing that would change this scenario would be if a coach called some sort of offensive play.
A more selective approach to hitting will put pressure on defensive two different ways:
A. More pitches will be thrown by pitchers which will (hopefully) force a pitching change earlier in the game. Since more relievers in youth baseball are not as good as starters, this is a plus for the offense.
B. Getting better pitches to hit will create more baseballs in play. The more balls hit hard there are, the greater chance there is for a mistake by the defense.
Finally, there is no secret that perceived pressure causes more mistakes. If an offense can manufacture pressure and remain confident in doing so, they will enjoy watching an error filled defense play more timid and give games away.

Next thing is to train you about the swing and the pitches.
The posture while swinging the slugger is to be accurate for producing the exact stroke with power. The slugger should be held with both hands, upright position behind the head. The front shoulder and the chin have to be tucked in. Keep the head still and wait for the release of the ball.
Moving the hands back a bit when the pitcher is ready for pitching the ball, will be helpful for a perfect swing.
Once the ball is released hit it as per your power and the direction. When to attempt hitting the ball depends on the direction in which it is traveling towards you. When it is in your reach and perfect placement nothing can stop you to hit a home run if connected properly.

Good to Great Athletes - Where Many Hang Up
By Nate Barnett
During a conversation with a youth baseball coach the other day, he was telling me about his team and how they were struggling to get better. This team had over a 70% plus winning percentage the past two years. The kids are used to winning. And there in lies the potential problem that prevents so many talented players and teams from becoming truly great players or teams.
I told the coach I had a couple ideas as to why this was occurring with his group of guys. Many athletes (especially under the age of 16) who are physically talented and mature earlier than others have a relatively easy time competing. They win a lot, hit a bunch of home runs, and steal bases at will. This comfortability and ease of winning doesn't necessarily do any favors for these good athletes. If they find themselves at the top of the league in numerous statistical categories, what incentive is there for them to work harder and learn different skills? The solution is a mindset shift of competing against oneself.
When I was in college I broke the home run record for my school. The next year my goal was to beat my own record. In order to accomplish this, I needed to modify and improve in a few different areas at the plate. This required more attention to baseball hitting drills and pitch selection. I broke my previous record by three home runs my junior year. I used this same mentality for my senior season. I had room to learn I wanted to beat myself once again to prove I hadn't reached a plateau. This competition with myself kept me working hard in the off season and I was able to avoid any complacency that sometimes strikes good athletes. If you're wondering if my work paid off and I was able to increase my home run totals, I did. I was able to put up eight more home runs than my junior year. Always work hard, good things will come to the athletes who do.

Core Strength Training is Vital to Your Baseball Success
By Lyle Johnson
In baseball, core strength training is vital to your baseball success.
A-Rod is not an excellent hitter because he is weak. He hits ropes because he has developed a high level of core strength relative to his swing. Core strength development assists in your balance ability, decreases the possibility of injury and is the first element that powers your swing.
Jon Boyle, the author of Unbreakable Abs says "up to 60% of your bat speed comes from your midsection."
Strengthening your core is also important in throwing the baseball; Boyle adds "the average pitcher can add 7-10 mph on their fastball in only 60 days utilizing baseball-specific core training"
"Your midsection, or core, strength can determine how well - or bad - you perform on the field, adds Boyle. "Every single movement and skill in the game of baseball starts with the muscles of your midsection. If your strength, flexibility and endurance are not where it should be then you can forget about regular playing time, let alone becoming a star."
The bottom line is if you desire to improve your swing and drive the ball into the gap for extra bases, working your abs is must in your training.
I have developed a four minute abdominal routine called the MVP Abs From Hell 4 Minute Workout

This circuit is guaranteed to make your abs burn and increase your power at the plate and add more speed on your fastball on the mound.

How to Help Your Child Overcome Their Fear of Playing Baseball - Eleven Tips to Perform Better
By Jay Granat
The baseball season for children in towns throughout the country is starting to get into full swing now that Spring has arrived. It can be a wonderful time of the year for the kids and for the parents. However, many kids struggle at baseball because they are terrified of being hit by the ball when they are in the field or when they are batting.
I get a lot of calls at this time of the year from parents who want their kids to become less scared, more comfortable and more confident when they step on the baseball field.
Here are a few tips to help your son or daughter if they are demonstrating a significant fear of being hit by the ball:
1. It is normal to have some fear of a moving object moving toward your body. Explain this to your child, but also tell them that they can learn how to protect themselves and how to manage the situation. Also, tell the kids that once they develop their baseball skills, they will overcome much of their discomfort.
2. Some children are afraid of being hit when they have a catch. If you can, begin playing catch with your child at an early age. If your child is under two or three, you can start by just rolling a ball back and forth to your son or daughter.
3. As your child grows older, you can start to use a sponge ball and begin tossing the ball softly toward your child from a close distance. Use an underhand toss and arch the ball so it gently moves towards your kid. Demonstrate how to catch the ball for your son or child and give them lots of praise as they learn how to receive the ball. Introduce the idea of greeting the ball with soft hands. I encouraged my kids to say "hello ball," as the would catch the ball to add some additional humor and playfulness to the learning process.
4. Use what coaches call the "sandwich technique." Insert a little instruction in between two phrases which praise and encourage them. ("Great job. Now just watch the ball into your hands a little more carefully. Now you are a star.")
5. As your child improves and gains some confidence in his or her catching ability, you can begin to introduce a tennis ball. Then you can move to a soft ball. Introducing your kids to a harder and harder ball in stages will help them to develop their confidence as they develop their skills. Periodically, toss a ball which will gently hit your child on their arm or leg. This will help your son or daughter to feel less scared of the flying object.
6. At age four to six you, you can introduce a glove to the process. Make sure you get a glove which is the right size and shape for your child. Gloves come in a variety of sizes and there are some that are very soft and easy to squeeze and to manage.
7. Begin with a tennis ball and continue to use the underhand toss until your child gets comfortable catching the ball in the glove. Don't introduce a baseball until your child appears confident and ready. You can use a tee ball as intermediate step in the learning process. These balls are not as hard as baseballs.
8. You need to demonstrate the various ways of turning the glove to accommodate the various spots your child will need to catch the ball in. Stand along side your child as show the four or five various positions.
9. If your child throws right handed, begin by tossing the ball to his or her left side. This is generally the easiest way to begin. Once they can catch a dozen balls in a row on this side, you can start tossing to the center of their bodies. Then, you can start tossing a few soft pop ups where they can be taught to catch the ball above their heads. The ball thrown to the right side of a right handed child is a tough catch, since they need to turn the glove as it crosses their body. This is not a natural act for most kids. (Obviously, you need to reverse these guidelines if your child is left handed.) Interestingly, my son is ambidextrous, so it took a little time to sort out which hand we wanted to use to throw the ball. The first glove I bought him was for a lefty. Then at age four, we shifted to a
right handed mitt.
10. When you teach your kid to field ground balls, tell them to open their glove, keep their head down watching the ball and field the ball in the center of their bodies. Begin with soft grounders and gradually increase the speed and vary the kinds of bounces your child experiences.
11. In order to improve your kids throwing skills. Teach them the proper grip. Many coaches teach a two finger grip where the second and third fingers are on the laces and the thumb is at the bottom of the ball. My daughter named it the bunny rabbit grip.
Have the child point his elbow toward their target and encourage him to place the ball behind their ear and step and throw. Begin with a short distance of perhaps four feet and gradually extend the distance. The step and throw gives the idea of weight transfer which is important in many sports.
Keep the encouragement and the compliments coming. Begin with short teaching sessions of perhaps ten minutes and increase them, if your child is enjoying the throwing and catching. He or she will tell you if they are interested in baseball. When my son began playing baseball, he didn't like it very much. Now he can't play enough baseball.

5 Stations During Batting Practice For Little League
By John R Di Nicola
It has been stated many times that pitching and defense wins ball games. We all know that it would be real boring if that is all teams did. It has been proven time and time again you can win without hitting . However we do have to address the issue so we have to practice hitting. Listed below are 5 stations that will help get your hitters ready for the live action of a game. You will need assistant to carry out these drills. It is important you recruit help. How much help you get will determine how many of these stations you will be able have in a practice.
Hitting off 'T"
Soft Toss
Tracking
Bunting
Batting Practice
Hitting off the "T"
You will for sure have to have hitting of a "T". This is mandatory. You will be limited to the amount of pitches you will throw each hitter. The more swings that get hitting off the "T" the better they will be prepared for batting practices and the game. The first few times through this stations have them hit the as if it were down the middle. Make sure the "T" is no higher than the players waist. Working on the following:
important that the feet are shoulder width apart and player is balanced
when hitting the ball the top hand always on top of the ball
hit the top of the ball driving it downward
pivoting back foot raising heel as the hands follow through hitting zone
As they get comfortable you can position the "T" for the inside pitch and out side pitch. Important when working on outside pitch to position the "T" behind home plate so as to illustrate to players they have to wait on the out side pitch. Also teach them to bring their hands back so their front shoulder turns in toward home plate. This will bring front foot in so they can drive the ball. Most players will open up the front shoulder and hit the ball off the end of the bat or completely miss it.
Soft Toss
The soft station is an extra in Little League. You may want to wait till later on in the season to use this station. Basically a coach on one knee positioned beside player and tossing ball to different zones of the plate. Players swings through ball using all the proper techniques from "T" drills. Hands on top of ball driving through the ball.
Tracking
This an an excellent drill to teach the Little League Player on keeping their eye's focused on the ball. Your above average hitters always work on tracking. Most of them will take pitches just to get the feel of how the pitcher is throwing. They always make the pitchers throw a lot of pitches. Teach them to follow the ball all way to the catcher mitt. This something they should do during batting practice and the game. The more they see the ball the bigger it looks. You can use a rag ball or a whiffle ball.
Bunting
The art of Bunting is so important at all levels of baseball and most neglected. In this day and age of baseball the Home Run is king. It has been proven in recent world series that small ball will win more championships than the Home Runs. Have them bunt at least five balls, down first base line and third base line. Later on you can work on bunts for base hits.
Batting Practice
Because you have so much do and trying to get all the players to hit you have to limit the amount of pitches to each batter (15-20). Have players first work on making contact. You will have the seasoned Little Leaguer who knocks the cover off the ball and then you will have the ones that you really have to work with to get them to make contact. This is why if you have the luxury of having the help to run the stations it would greatly speed up the learning curve.
Most likely you will only use the "T" and Live Batting Practices. Using this model will afford you to run a practice without having a marathon practices. Do not try and do all 5 stations the first practice. As you become comfortable you can adjust your practice schedule and add stations. Most likely you will never do all five in one practice.
Practices Makes Perfect

Baseball College Recruiting: 10 Facts Baseball Players, Coaches, and Parents Need to Know
By Kenny Buford
Although many of the colleges want you to believe you have to be the top of the top for baseball college recruiting, that isn’t always so. In fact, many times colleges are assuming that they are not looking at the top 5% because those student athletes may already be spoken for.
Some things to remember:
1. Grades count. Sure, athletic ability is important, but do you have the grades to get into the college admissions office and catch their eye even without your sports ability? You should have grades that support you as a well-rounded student, not just an image of a ball player alone.
2. Do you know what a college coach values in a player? Is it the same as a high school coach or a teen-level coach? What do you bring to the coach that is different from the myriad of other players your age and ability that makes you a step above? Can you bring the values to the team that your coach is looking for?
3. What is your motivation? Not just “are you motivated” but what motivates you? Is it fame, money or a passion for the game? Do you work at your game based upon only your motivation? Do you have many motivators for your game? This is important; because parents, students and coaches will need to understand the motivators.
4. Are you motivated? As a verb, do you have it? Do you have what it takes to look into adversity and tough times and still shine? This is going to be important to be able to display to prospective colleges and future coaches as this may be a tie breaker trait.
5. Don’t wait until the last minute. Some students start as early as their freshman year in marketing themselves to colleges. If you are a senior and haven’t started, don’t let that discourage you, but do get moving on that! Market yourself as early as you can as a true athlete, because every moment you are no exposing your abilities, your peers are.
6. Do you, or do you plan to, meet the core requirements of entering college? If you are a great player, it’s important to have pretty good grades and decent SAT scores. There are a myriad of Internet sites that can help you make sure you are not lagging, and your guidance office should be able to help you. Again, it’s never too early to start working on your sports collegiate career.
7. Know the reality. According to statistics, less than 15% of high school baseball players will play college baseball. Just know your realities so if you don’t make the team, you are not devastated. It’s as important to know the realities of the situations as well as how to best get into a situation. Never enter any situation blind to both sides.
8. Look at the bigger picture. You may want to play ball but you may also want to have a certain climate, social life and academic schedule that fits your desires. Look at more than just the team; because you are more than just a ball player.
9. Do you have what it takes? It’s more than just the above. There is also something called “Luck and Timing”. Absolutely realize that you have to have both in addition to all the things you can control. Realize that a little of this is going to be out of your control.
10. Finances: not everyone is going to be playing ball on scholarship, or at least on full scholarship. Decide if the cost is worth the sport participation. If you are reading this, the answer probably is “yes, of course it is” but realize an injury or a sudden lack of passion means you still have the finances to deal with but none of the glory of the sport. Really weigh your financial realities.
All of this is meant to get you thinking – be it a parent or a player. Even a coach reading this needs to understand that you are going to be looking at some kids who have the research down pat and can impress you, but some other youth will be just as impressive deep down, but you may have to scratch the surface a bit. Not everyone knows the ins and outs of impressing a coach and a college but may be an exceptional player, student and person under it all. It’s everyone’s responsibility to learn as much as possible and do what they can to ensure the best options for all involved.

Tips To Succeed Against The Great Curveball
By Sumit Bhatnagar and Parul Aggarwal
Following are some more tips and guidelines that will definitely help you to master the great curveball:
• Your approach should be to the opposite field when you are facing the same side pitcher. In this way, you can keep your front side in that is extremely important to succeed with this pitch.
• In case the ball hangs inside, never guide the ball to the opposite field. Just get your bat’s head out and pull it.
• A hanging curveball is, no doubt, the easiest pitch to hit but if you do not tackle it in the right way, you can land into a lot of trouble.
• Looking for the fastball and still hitting the curveball is easy but looking for a curveball and hitting a fastball will actually put you to test. It is almost impossible.
• Also, if the curveball starts up and out of the strike zone, it will break down into the strike zone. So, it is highly recommended that you should never wait for the curveball to come down to you.
• Always, try to keep your body down. You can never be a successful off-speed hitter if the ball breaks down when you go to hit it.
• ‘Hesitation’ is yet another key to hitting the curveball. That is, a little bit of hesitation is needed after your stride foot comes down.
• Make sure that your hands and majority of your weight should be kept at your back.
To conclude, there is no shortcut to success. You need to practice regularly and do your homework sincerely to conquer the great curveball.
